Fitness to function

It is the SES volunteer's responsibility to ensure that they have an appropriate level of fitness to perform those SES functions they have been trained in e.g. volunteers may consider themselves fairly fit however might experience discomfort during a land search over rough terrain. In this situation a volunteer may impede the search by needing to be rescued.

Roles can vary from Group to Group depending on their operational capacity. Check with your local SES Group to see what you can do.

The QSES is an "emergency service" so requires commitment and able bodied members ready to perform what can sometimes be very labour intensive or physical/mentally taxing functions. It is expected that people apply on the condition that they are certain of their ability to work under pressure, in uncomfortable conditions and maintain compliance with SES operations doctrine. It is also a requirement that applicants have discussed their application with their employer and agreed on reasonable terms of workplace release to perform operational activities.

SES Groups take on members based on their requirements and capacity to manage memberships. There is mandatory training and a requirement to be assessed prior to being approved to perform any QSES functions. An SES Executive may also require a medical form to be approved by a registered general practitioner prior to considering an application.
